Tournament of Champions!

Mon May 11, 2009, 1:40 PM
Come one, come all to show the deviant world your artistic powers!

There is enough interest in having the tournament mentioned in my last journal to go ahead and roll with it. This is open to anybody and everybody who can lift a pencil and post on deviantart, so if you know anybody who might be interested let them know! If you're interested all you gotta do is respond to this journal or send me a note saying you're in and the character you'll be using. If you're REALLY interested there's a WHOLE ton of stuff down there to read. Have fun!

THE GOAL

-To have fun and show off what we've learned this year
-To keep in touch over the summer
-To have fun drawing our favorite character!
-To challenge our art skills with friendly competition and gain valuable practice and possibly some portfolio pieces over summer vacation
-To have fun!!

THE BREAK DOWN

Contestants will chose a champion to represent them on the field of battle, be it an original or pre-existing character. You will then be matched up against another artist and make war with them by drawing your character defeating theirs in glorious battle. Competitors will clash this way until one has hacked their way through quill and bristol and, stained with the ink of their fallen opponents, stand triumphant atop a mountain of carnage to be crowned the victor!

THE RULES

-Original characters: Anybody using an original character must supply a reference sheet (or sheets) with their character and any information you think would be useful (Weapons, armor, list of powers, personality traits etc.) If you have a picture of this character already drawn you can just use that and type whatever information you want, as long as your opponent will be able to draw them
-Pre-existing characters: You just need to list who you're using. If you wish you can supply a reference sheet or any pictures you've drawn of that character but it's not necessary as long as they're relatively easy to find online. Overpowered superheroes like superman or doctor manhattan probably wont work so well, try to keep them at least semidefeatable (screw you, spell check, that's a word!)
-Reference and round entries have to be on deviantart so I can post a link to them. This way everyone can easily find what they need.

THE BATTLE

-You are to draw your character defeating your opponents in any style you wish, so long as yours is the clear victor.
-You may draw in any style, size and medium you want, so long as you can show it on deviantart. If you want to draw a single illustration of the characters, that's fine. If you want to do a comic style page with text balloons/captions that's also fine. A series of pages? even better! Your art is your weapon, so choose wisely, and according to your strengths!

THE TOURNAMENT

-Each round will be judged by a panel of impartial experts soon to be revealed
-Tournament structure will be determined after I know how many people are in for sure. There may be brackets or it may be run round robin style, who knows!

DEADLINES

I know, I know, nobody likes deadlines... But they are a cold fact of life and there's only so much summer to go around so deadlines are a must

-The tentative start date I'm thinking is May 22nd (one week after the Kubert school lets out)
-Depending on how many rounds there will be I'm thinking each round will last 2-3 weeks. This is extremely tentative so give feedback to how long you’d like to see for each round.

GOOD VS. EVIL???

-If there's enough interest we could split into teams of good and evil. Just a thought

If you actually read through all that, thanks! I spent entirely too much time writing it lol

keep me posted man, sounds like fun. I don't get the rounds thing yet, just when you need the artwork will be enough info for me. I'm a simple guy.

I'm still pretty interested! But don't sign me up quite yet. I don't know how life is gonna hit me when I head back home and I'm already gonna try to do a weekly updated online comic with friends over the summer.
Not to mention the possibility of finding some sucke-ERsome people to commission me (not holding my breath for that one though xD )
And I think 2 weeks sounds good! It's not like were trying to spit out 8 projects a week like during school, and it's good to keep everyone constantly drawing. I agree with Kim that sometimes it's not quite as easy trying to get back into drawing 100% when you haven't been doing much for so long too.
